CIMMYT AND IITA Collaborator

Launched in 2006. The Drought Maize for African (DTMA) Project aims to mitigate drought and other constrainsts to maize production is Sub -Saharan African, increasing maize yields by atleast one ton, per hectare under moderate drought and with a 20 to 30% increase over farmer's current yields, benefting 30 - 40 million people in 13 African countries. The project brings together men and women farmers, research institutions, extension specialists, seed producers, farmer community organization and non - governmental organizations. It is jointly implemented by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMTY) and International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), in close collaboration with National Agricultural Research System in participating nations. Millions farmers in the region are already benefiting from the outputs of this partnership, which includes support and training for African seed producers and promoting vibrant, competitive seed markets.

Project Tittle

i. Production and Promotion of Drought Tolerance Maize for Africa (DTMA).

ii. Performance evaluation of Promising drought escaping and/ or tolerance varities and hybrids in multiple location.

iii. Participatory on - farm evaluation of drought tolerant maize varities and hybrids in some North West and North Central States of Nigeria..

iv. Breeder and founadtion seed production of DT varities and hybrids.

v. Complementary plant breeding and breeder seed production.
